Who Are Meladie's Clients?
  • Adults

Do you feel confused, lost or sad? Do you find yourself thinking, “There should be more to life than this?” Are there problematic relationships in your life? If so, I would like to help. I practice an integrated form of therapy which is holistic. We start by looking at all aspects of your life: physical, emotional, spiritual. We then identify some goals, both short and long term. Through understanding the past and experiencing the present moment, I will help you move toward a future that is fulfilling.

  • Children and Adolescents

“A person’s a person no matter how small” – Dr. SeussJust as we experience difficult emotions and painful events in our lives, so do children. However, they are often at a disadvantage because they do not have access to the language to express those feelings or the skills to cope with them. Instead, they may internalize their painful or confusing feelings or externalize them through problematic behaviors. If you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing or confused by their behaviors, please call. By connecting through play, metaphor and good humor, I will help your child find his or her voice and learn coping skills for managing those difficult emotions.

  • Families

Families are a type of system that in some ways can be compared to an engine. All of the parts of the “engine” need to be operating to get the job of living done. However, any system can become derailed or offline. When this happens, it can be helpful to go in for a “tune-up”.I have experience working with families to improve communication and create connections. My goal in family therapy is to help all members of the system to get and to stay connected.

How Does She Help Them?

While it may seem quite simple, sometimes we need someone to listen, not just to our words, but to the feelings behind those words. Research has proven that telling our stories and receiving feedback can provide emotional relief. Additionally, being heard helps us to crystalize our goals and thinking and take action in areas where previously we might have been stuck.

My goal in individual therapy is to create a safe space for each person to be heard while telling his or her story. I consider it an honor and a privilege to hold that space and witness the journey.

  • Play Therapy

Language is a skill that develops throughout childhood. This puts children needing to express their feelings at a disadvantage. That is, they may have trouble telling us how they feel. Fortunately, we can learn about what a child is “saying” through their actions. Play is the first and natural language of children. It is how they learn about the world and the people around them.

Play therapy is a type of expressive therapy used most often with children. I am a Registered Play Therapist. This means that I have received specialized training in interacting and communicating with children through play.

I have also received training in and practice Filial Therapy. This is a special type of play therapy developed in the 1960s which empowers parents to use the skills of non-directive play therapy to learn about and increase communication with their child.

Those wishing to learn more about play therapy and its proven benefits can visit the Association for Play Therapy website.

  • Group Therapy

Group therapy is a therapeutic modality that offers many benefits to participants. Group members have the opportunity to learn and practice social skills while receiving and providing feedback to other group members. I facilitate a variety of groups of children, adolescents and parents.  A sample of group themes are listed here:

• Gifted students: Challenges and Rewards
• Social Skills groups: Be a Superflexible Superhero!
• Peace in Mind, Body and Heart: Defeating Anxiety the Natural Way

An additional benefit of group therapy is economics; group therapy is generally less expensive than individual therapy. Many insurance companies offer reimbursement for group therapy. I am happy to assist you in accessing those benefits.

Groups form throughout the year based on the needs of my clients and the community.

  • Workshops for Parents, Teachers and Schools

Workshops for groups of parents or teachers is a fun and engaging way to learn new skills and share experiences with others. I have a variety of presentations prepared on topics that range from positive discipline to solving sleep troubles to creating a peaceful home and classroom. My interactive style of presentation is guaranteed to enlighten and entertain.

I have presented to groups of teachers at preschools, mom’s clubs and in parents’ homes.

Please contact me today with your needs. My diverse experience and extensive resources enables me to create a workshop tailored to your group’s needs.
  • Consultations for Parents

My child won’t sleep in his/her own bed!

I can’t get my daughter to eat anything!

We constantly fight about chores and homework!

Parenting is a rewarding yet demanding job. Despite an abundance of books, advice columns and other media dedicated to “raising your kids right”, many parents struggle to make the right decisions for their families. As the parent of two young children myself, I understand how challenging it can be to sift through the mountains of information and advice and make decisions that feel right. However, I do know that within each parent is the power to live and raise a family according to one’s values and beliefs. My work with parents involves creating a vision of what they want their family to look and feel like. Just as importantly, I help parents find practical solutions for everyday problems. I believe in empowering parents to create a calm and peaceful home environment where everyone thrives.

What are Meladie's Specialties?

In addition to helping clients cope with uncomfortable feelings and problematic feelings and behaviors, I have a variety of specialties and interests. I have received training in the following areas and would be happy to help you if you have questions.

  • Play Therapy and Filial Therapy

Language is a skill that develops throughout childhood. This puts children needing to express their feelings at a disadvantage. That is, they may have trouble telling us how they feel. • Military Spouses

Being the spouse of a military service member offers a unique set of challenges. Frequent moves, separation due to deployment, difficulty in maintaining career goals are just a few of the stresses a military spouse may face. Often, these challenges are compounded by a sense of guilt for even feeling this stress. Many military spouses feel that they should be strong for their spouse and their children.

I believe that being strong often means taking care of oneself before trying to take care of others. I have an interest in and a special respect for the work that members of the military and their families have done. I offer a confidential, supportive environment for the spouses of military members.

  • LGBT Youth and Families

Individuals who are gender non-conforming or whose sexual orientation may be in the minority face special challenges. They may feel misunderstood, angry, anxious or depressed. The families of these individuals may be confused, worried or at a loss about how to be supportive to their loved one.

I have a special interest in working with sexual minority youth and their families and have had the good fortune of connecting with a talented network of professionals in the area. At the core of my work is a dedication to providing a safe, non-judgemental environment to all.

  • Birds, Bees and Kids

I spent many years as a sexuality educator for both children and the adults entrusted with teaching them. I also understand how difficult it can be to discuss matters of sexuality and human development with children. Nevertheless, I know how very important it is to have these discussions.

Research shows that an open dialogue with one’s children about matters of sexuality reduces the incidence of teen pregnancy and risky sexual behaviors. Furthermore, the issue of sexuality cannot be covered in one brief encounter. Rather, the topic should be handled with the sensitivity and thoughtfulness one gives to other matters of life. I believe loving our bodies, minds and spirits is fundamental to a healthy development. I have created a number of workshops and groups to help parents have these tricky conversations with their children.

    Here are a sample:

    Poo-poo and pee-pee

A preschool human sexuality workshop for parents

It’s never to early to build a healthy foundation for human sexuality. In this 2-hour workshop, parents of children ages 2 to 6 will learn the answers to these questions:

• What should my kids know?
• When should they know it?
• What do I say?
• How do I keep my child safe?
• Is this normal?

Where Do Babies Come From?

A human sexuality workshop for parents

At some point, every parent has to decide how to answer this question. Be Prepared!

In this 2 hour workshop, parents of children ages 7-10 will discover the answers to these questions and many more:

• How do I start the conversation?
• What is the right thing to say?
• What if I say the wrong thing?

Am I Normal?

A group for mothers and their daughters
A group for fathers and their sons

These 5-week groups are designed to increase communication between parents and their children aged 9-13. Both kids and adults are guaranteed to learn something new about themselves, each other, and the human body!
